The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) is excited to invite South African students to apply for their Bursary Programme for the 2025 academic year. This opportunity is designed to support students pursuing qualifications in Civil Engineering and related disciplines.
Bursary Types and Coverage
IMESA will be awarding two types of bursaries:
- Bursary Scheme A (for non-IMESA members): This scheme is for students studying towards a Civil Engineering qualification or a related discipline of infrastructure engineering approved by the Executive Council of IMESA.
- Bursary Scheme B (for dependents of IMESA members): This scheme is for children of IMESA members studying towards a Civil Engineering qualification or a related discipline of infrastructure engineering.
The bursary will cover tuition fees and books, up to a maximum value of R50,000.

Additional Benefits
Bursary recipients will:
- Be appointed a mentor.
- Be encouraged to participate in IMESA activities.
The bursary funds will be paid directly to the tertiary institution where the recipient is studying within 60 days of IMESA receiving the student account statement (or as agreed upon between the IMESA representative and student). Prior to the first bursary instalment, students must provide IMESA Head Office with proof of enrolment for the specific course and a medical certificate.
Successful candidates will be notified by the end of 2024 and will undergo a full evaluation process before bursaries are awarded.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Bursary Scheme A (for non-IMESA members):
- Studying full-time towards a Civil Engineering degree or a related infrastructure engineering discipline.
- Completed their first year of study.
- Entering their second year (or later) of study in 2025.
- Studying at an ECSA accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
- Proven financial need (unable to afford studies without a bursary).
Bursary Scheme B (for dependents of IMESA members):
- Must be a child or dependent of an IMESA member (membership held for a minimum of 5 years).
- Studying full-time towards a Civil Engineering degree or a related infrastructure engineering discipline.
- Completed their first year of study.
- Entering their second year (or later) of study in 2025.
- Studying at an ECSA accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.

To apply, download and complete the relevant IMESA bursary application form:
- Bursary Scheme A: IMESA Bursary Application Form 2025 (for non-members)
- Bursary Scheme B: IMESA Bursary Application Form 2025 (for dependents of members)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory; missing items may lead to disqualification):
- Certified copy of ID document.
- Certified copy of 2024 mid-year exam results.
- Undersigned statement from the tertiary institute declaring your academic progress in your first year.
- Affidavit declaring your parents’ or guardians’ monthly income and your financial situation.

Important Notes
- Applicants must notify IMESA of any other bursaries they have received, as this will be considered before awarding the IMESA bursary.
- Bursary recipients are not guaranteed employment with IMESA after graduation. However, students are encouraged to pursue a career in Local Government if possible.
