The South Deep Education Trust (SDET) invites applications for the 2025 academic year. This bursary supports Diploma and Degree studies in ANY field, whether technical or non-technical.
The bursary offers full financial assistance, covering:
- Full tuition fees
- Textbooks and necessary equipment (e.g., dentistry or engineering tools)
- Accommodation (both on- and off-campus)
- A laptop allowance
- A monthly stipend (10 months per year)
Additionally, students benefit from:
- Personal development programs
- Mentorship support
- Case-by-case tutoring
As part of the bursary requirements, recipients are encouraged to complete one week of volunteering or vacation work in their community annually. This equips graduates with essential workplace skills.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet these criteria:
- Financial need: Total household income not exceeding R350,000 per annum
- Residency: Must live in South Deep host communities (e.g., Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Simunye, Poortjie) or labour-sending areas (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Eastern Cape)
- Exclusions: Cannot be dependents of Gold Fields employees or Trustees of South Deep Education and Community Trusts
- Matriculation status: Currently in Matric (2024) or completed Matric
- Tertiary enrollment: Must be studying or provisionally accepted to study at a public university or TVET college in South Africa for 2025
- Academic performance:
- Matric applicants: Achieved at least 75% (excluding Life Orientation)
- Current tertiary students: Minimum average of 65%
- Returning SDET bursary applicants: Passed the most recent year of study
- Funding: Cannot hold any other bursary, scholarship, or funding
