It is designed for students from Umkhanyakude, Zululand, and King Cetshwayo districts in KwaZulu-Natal.
Eligibility Criteria – Bursaries in Health Science
Applicants must meet these requirements:
- Reside in Umkhanyakude, Zululand, or King Cetshwayo districts and the catchment areas of specific hospitals.
- Be in Matric or have completed Matric.
- Be pursuing one of the eligible Health Science degrees.
- Have been accepted at a recognized public university (excluding UNISA).
- Be entering the 1st or 2nd year (4-year degrees) or 1st to 3rd year (medical degrees).
- Be studying towards their first degree (no prior degrees or diplomas).
- Have NSFAS funding or have applied for it in 2025.
- Commit to work at one of the hospitals for at least two years post-graduation.

The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation is offering bursaries for the 2025 academic year, aimed at supporting students from Umkhanyakude, Zululand, and King Cetshwayo districts in KwaZulu-Natal. This bursary program specifically assists those who already receive NSFAS financial support but require additional top-up funding to cover unmet educational costs. The awards are available for students pursuing degrees in Audiology, Dentistry, Dental Therapy, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Radiography (Ultrasonography), and Speech and Language Therapy.
Bursary recipients benefit from comprehensive support, including top-up allowances, academic and social mentoring, and hands-on work exposure at rural hospitals. This practical experience enhances learning and helps students develop a deeper understanding of their field. Additionally, participants will take part in life skills workshops to build essential personal and professional skills.
To qualify for the bursary, applicants must be residing in the designated districts and catchment areas of specific hospitals, be in Matric or have completed Matric, and have been accepted to study at a recognized public university in South Africa (excluding UNISA). They must be entering their first or subsequent years of study in 2025 and should be studying towards their first degree. Applicants must also have applied for or already received NSFAS funding and agree to work at one of the specified hospitals for at least two years after graduation.
