Bursary for university or VTET colleges

Bursary Coverage

Successful candidates will receive financial support covering the following:

  • Full tuition fees for the duration of the study.
  • Accommodation (both on-campus and off-campus options).
  • Textbooks for academic use.
  • Specialised equipment for certain fields of study (e.g., engineering, dentistry, architecture).
  • Laptop allowance to aid in online and offline learning.
  • Monthly stipend for 10 months to cover personal needs.
  • Additional support such as personal development, mentorship, and tutoring (provided at the discretion of SDET Trustees).

Note: Recipients will also be encouraged to contribute to their communities by completing one week of vacation or volunteering work annually.


Eligibility Criteria – Bursary for university or TVET college

General Requirements:

  1. Applicants must come from low-income households with an annual household income of R350,000 or less.
  2. Applicants must reside in one of the following areas:
    • South Deep host communities: Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Simunye, and Poortjie.
    • Labour Sending Areas: KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Eastern Cape.
  3. Applicants cannot be dependents of employees of Gold Fields, its divisions, or related entities, nor of Trustees of the South Deep Education Trust.

For Grade 12 Learners:

  • Achieved a minimum average pass mark of 75% (excluding Life Orientation) in their National Senior Certificate.
  • Provisionally accepted to study for a diploma or degree at a public university or TVET college in South Africa.
  • Must not have any other form of funding for their tertiary studies.

For Current University/TVET College Students:

  • First-time applicants: Must have an average pass mark of 65% in their most recent academic year. (Note: The Trust will not cover repeat modules, which are the applicant’s responsibility.)
  • Returning SDET bursary holders: Must have passed their most recent year of study.

Interested candidates must submit their applications online via the South Deep Education Trust Bursaries Portal.
