About DSAC Bursary
The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) is pleased to announce the availability of bursaries for the 2025 academic year. These bursaries aim to support South African students pursuing Undergraduate or Postgraduate studies in heritage-related programmes. DSAC’s initiative promotes the preservation, promotion, and development of South Africa’s cultural and historical heritage. These bursaries are designed to nurture talent and promote artistic expression while reducing financial barriers to education. Many organizations, including government departments, private institutions, and non-profits, offer art bursaries to support individuals passionate about making a meaningful impact in the arts sector
The bursaries are awarded to students pursuing studies in the following critical fields:
- Anthropology, with a preference for Postgraduates specialising in Forensics.
- Archaeology, with a preference for Postgraduates specialising in Bioarchaeology.
- Geography and Geomatic Sciences, including Postgraduates specialising in Cartography and GIS.
- Archives and Records Management.
- Library and Information Sciences.
- Conservation of the Built Environment, including Preventive Conservation (specific to fields of study rather than courses).
- Heritage and Museum Studies.
- Palaeontology.
- Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and related fields contributing to the promotion of SA Living Heritage.
- History.
- Digitisation of Heritage Resources.
The bursary will cover various expenses to a maximum value of R110,000 per student, with specific allocation to:
- Tuition fees.
- Prescribed books.
- Electronic devices (up to R10,000, with supporting receipts).
- Accommodation (up to R50,000 where applicable).
- Meals (up to R18,500 where applicable).
- Transport (up to R10,000 where applicable).
Successful applicants must sign a contract with DSAC.
Eligibility Requirements – Art bursaries
To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens.
- Age: Applicants must be 40 years old or younger.
- Education:
- Be in Matric in 2024 or have already completed Matric.
- Be studying or planning to study in one of the heritage-related programmes listed above.
- Institution:
- Applicants must study at or be accepted to an institution accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
- Academic Performance: Applicants must have a strong academic record.
- Employment Status:
- Must not be fully employed in the private sector, government, or state agencies earning more than R130,000 annually.
- Funding: Must not be a recipient of another bursary.
