After 4 years of anticipation, the biggest music awards show in Africa is back and this time hosted in Uganda, in Kampala which is the capital city. These will be the first MAMAs to be hosted and streamed virtually in history due to the world pandemic, this will be the first time Uganda, ‘The Pearl’ of Africa will be hosting the event as well. Talk about a remarkable forging of history! The awards will be on the 20th of February 2021 (20/02/21) a date not to miss!
Minister of Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda went to say that “This is Africa’s best moment as we showcase the Pearl of Africa. Welcome MAMAs to the Pearl of Africa! Welcome MAMAs to Uganda”
The MTV Africa Music Awards (also known as the MAMAs) were established in 2008 by MTV networks (now ViacomCBS Networks Africa) to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa music industry. The 2008 and 2010 events took place in the land of Nigeria in the city of Abuja and Lagos respectively. In 2009, the event was then hosted again in Nairobi, Kenya after these 3 events, however, the awards came to a pause then returning to be hosted in Mzansi- Durban, in 2014 and again in Johannesburg- the year of 2016.
“Everyone knows that the Pearl of Africa (Uganda) is one of the most beautiful, most amazing parts of Africa…and the people, the vibe, the music in Uganda…there is no other place that is well and ready to host the MAMAs in 2021,”
These positive words by Monde Twala- a senior vice president of ViacomCBS Networks Africa, truly highlight the significant impact this awards show will bring in uniting African cultures once again; through the melodies and rhythms of the African sounds. We look forward to witnessing the exuberant artists from all over the continent gelling as one, you do not wanna miss this one Mzansi.
Television personality Somizi Mhlongo is preparing for the release of his first ever cookbook in a few weeks time. The star says he wants to break records with the book, like never before and completely and wholeheartedly urging the public and fans to pre-order a copy.
A true definition of excitement for the launch, Somizi took to Instagram to make the announcement to his fans in a short clip, urging and relying on them to enable the cookbook titled Dinner At Somizi’s: I Am Not A Chef to “break records”.
Though the cookbook’s exact release date is still to be confirmed, it will be available at all CNA stores once it does hit the shelves. Mzansi is pleased with the outcome of Somizi’s successes and ready for the release of the cookbook.
The 2020 E! People’s choice 46th annual awards graced our screens here in Mzansi on November 15th, channel 124 on DSTV. The anticipated award show announced its nominees in September 2020, leaving the general public with over one month to vote in their favourite entertainer in popular culture. The show was hosted by the lovely Demi Lovato and broadcasted live from Santa Monica, California.
Some stars from our continent are Dimma Umeh all the way from Nigeria, actress Lydia Forson from Ghana and of course the Kenyan internet sensation Elsa Majimbo who kept the world in stitches amidst the global pandemic with her witty jokes. Elsa Majimbo who has bagged the African Social Star award, received the news at the comfort of her home in Nairobi via an online video which was shared on Instagram by E! at which she clearly could not hold her delight, showing her usual bright smile and famous quirky laugh just with less shade this time (literally).
The star recently featured on Vogue magazine issue where she dived deeper explaining matters of colourism- how they affected her whilst growing up and; how the shaded glasses she always rocks in the videos landed her a gift of Rihanna’s newest Fenty collection glasses as a token of appreciation. A big congratulations to Elsa Majimbo. Indeed hard-work and passion combined can take you where your wildest dreams couldn’t.
It came as no surprise that our gorgeous reigning Miss Universe Zozi Tunzi amongst the effervescent Sho Madjozi, the multi-talented Thuso Mbedu, model & media star, Karl Kugelmann and TikTok star Wian van den Berg were the top selected in Mzansi- nominated for the African Social Stars. Although neither of them brought the award home, we send a huge congratulations to them for being recognised on such a significant world platform.
Give us your thoughts on who would you have liked to see win and do you think this is a deserved win for the Kenyan star?
