3 TYPES OF INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT – WHICH ONE ARE USING?

Getting your profile type right is key in determining your Instagram strategy and will align you with what you are using your account for. Instagram profile types are different. while the basic features around posting remain the same, they certainly different when it comes to tools and additional features.

They are 3 types of Instagram account: Personal, Business, and Creator accounts. I am going to explain each type of account and also touch on the advantages and disadvantages of each.

PERSONAL ACCOUNT

“Personal”, is just for the most basic level. if you just want to connect with your close friends and family, uploads videos and photos on Instagram to save them, and uploading content for your own personal satisfaction, then a Personal account is for you.

Advantages of Personal account

  • You can set this account as Public or Private
  • It has basic features like Feeds, Story, IGTV, Reels etc
  • You can apply for verification provided your account is Public
  • You can connect it with multiple Facebook pages

Disadvantages of Personal Account

  • No access to the Insights
  • No analytics
  • No contact details
  • Can’t monetize
  • Limited features

Who Needs this type of account?

  • People who just want to save their photos/videos on Instagram
  • People who just want to connect with their small circle (family & Friends)
  • any person who wants a limited level of instagram experience
  • People who are not interested in monetizing their posts
  • People who are not selling Product and services

BUSINESS ACCOUNT

Instagram made it easier for businesses to showcase their products and services on their platform. We have seen accounts that are business accounts and most are used by brands/companies. However, because some people do not understand types of Instagram account, they tend to use Personal account for their businesses hence their businesses are not growing on Instagram, right products but wrong type of account. This type of account is not so different from the creator account – they both have almost the same features.

Advantages of Business Account

  • it has the same basic features, IGTV , story, Feeds as a Personal account
  • You can be able do run IG Ads
  • Access to the insights and Analytics
  • if your business has over 10k followers, you can be able to implement the SWIPE UP feature
  • You can choose a category of your business. – e.g Media or organization
  • Access to Creator Studio if using a Desktop
  • Video chat within DM
  • You can Display Business contact details
  • Access to Instagram shopping set up

Disadvantages of Business Account

  • Can’t set to Private
  • Needs to be linked with Facebook Page
  • Can Only be linked to one Facebook Page

Who Needs this type of account?

  • All businesses that post products/service on instagram.
  • if you will need to run Instagram Ads
  • Brands who want online presence and want to raise awareness

CREATOR ACCOUNT

This is my favorite type of account. I use creator account because I create content to entertain and showcase my talent. I do not post photos of myself because this account is a creator account, not a personal account. People like influencers, Models, Artists, Portraits, Dj, Musicians, Creators …should use this type of account – each type of account has its own algorithm.

Advantages of creator account

  • You can monetize this account
  • Basic features like IGTV, story, Feed and Reels
  • if your account is over 10k, you can do swipe up with a link
  • You can access insights (demographics and psychographics)
  • You can include your contact details
  • it allows you to choose the category – Creator , influencer
  • You can request verification
  • You can manage and create promotions
  • You can use instagram PAID Ads

Disadvantages of a creator Account

  • You can’t set it to private
  • You can only link it to one facebook page

Who Needs this type of account?

  • Models, influencers, music maker, comedians, entertainers or anyone who wants to showcase their talent
